The Trinity War Reading Order

THE TRINITY WAR READING ORDER

The Trinity of Sin Emerges Complete

Beginning Date: July 2013
End Date: August 2013

There are three mysterious forces cursed to walk the world for eternity: They are The Phantom Stranger, The Question, and the mysterious lady known as Pandora. Together, the DC Universe knows of them as the "Trinity of Sin".

It is now present day. Pandora has emerged on the proverbial field and now decided to recover the ill-fated Pandora's Box which caused her downfall long ago. Her goal is simple: return the Seven Deadly Sins to the box. The process, however, is the problem; she will go through heroes and villains to accomplish this task, even if it means she is the unknowning pawn of a mysterious outsider who leads The Secret Society for his own purposes.

What you're about to read is the Trinity War Reading Order. It's fairly straight-forward and only comprised of a handful of issues. But included here is also some artwork and detailed summaries of each title. Don't worry! If you just want the RO itself, I've put it up here near the top. If you want more, though, continue downward.

Detailed Summaries
Spoiler Information Included

P01 Trinity War Preview - Adds awesome details to the event, but is not part of the official release. This also may have been published somewhere else, but I couldn't find it. Starring the mysterious "Pandora", the issue begins with her fate at the Rock of Eternity. She's opened the Pandora's Box, unleashed evil, and been sentenced to live eternity with two others. Together, they are named "The Trinity of Sin". The story then follows her as she moves from STAR Labs Red Room to the ARGUS Black Room, finding the Pandora Box once more. It then cuts to a scene with Justice Leagues fighting each other. The remainder of the issue is artwork for the event.
P02 Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1 - Starts The Trinity War Prelude. Pandora begins by relating her origin, how she found the Box, opened it, and unleashed the Seven Deadly Sins upon mankind. Soon after, she's summoned to the Rock of Eternity and cursed to walk the world eternally undead, witnessing the results of her act. The issue then shows her walking through the ages, then turning to the teachings of the Druids, Wizards, Healers, and multiple martial arts. It also shows her meeting Vandal Savage. It finally brings her to present day 2013 where she meets a weapons maker in Aleppo who creates her runed guns and armament. Lastly, she's confronted by one of the mages of the Rock of Eternity who begs her forgiveness, stating they were wrong to curse her. He tells her that to imprison the seven sins, she needs to reacquire the Box and have someone of Brightest or Darkest heart open it. He leaves, then she believes she knows where to go. On the last panel, the heroic "S" of Superman gives us indication of who that may be.

001 Justice League #22 - Starts the official event. Chapter 1: The Deathcard. Beginning with a young woman walking into Madame Xanadu's shop. Xanadu begins drawing cards, each one leading to a small story introducing the Trinity War. Shazam! decides to fly to Kahndaq and spread Black Adam's ashes over the soil. At the same time, Pandora approaches Superman while he is with Wonder Woman. She gives him the Box to open, but he gets hit hard from the power. Pandora quickly gets the Box away from him. While Shazam! is one his way to Kahndaq, The Justice League (JL) finds out, heading their to route him. This, in turn, alerts Amanda Waller's Justice League of America (JLD), who boards a plane to route the JL. Shazam! and Superman meet and fight it out. Soon, the whole JL appears to stop him, but they are suddenly face-to-face with the JLA who orders them to leave. Suddenly, in response to Doctor Light's power, Superman goes crazy and kills him with his heat vision. Back at Xanadu's shop, she's increasingly worried about the "Trinity War" as she "sees" events unfold. Suddenly, she's ambushed by the girl, who is really "Plastique", a member of the Secret Society. She blows up Xanadu's shop. Behind the scenes, each member of the Trinity of Sin is now active, but the person manipulating everyone is the unknown leader of the Secret Society.
002 Justice League of America #6 - Chapter 2: No Title. The fight between the JL and JLA still continues in Kahndaq until Superman creates a might backlash and says he needs to be taken in. Steve Trevor then orders his arrest. The story continues back at ARGUS where the teams are recovering from their wounds. Waller then asks Firestorm to make her Kryptonite. At the same time, Batman and Wonder Woman are with a confined Superman. Wonder Woman then tells the Caped Crusader that what really caused Doctor Light's death was when Pandora's Box was put in his hands. Batman doesn't quite believe her. In turn, Diana goes to Hephaestus, the weaponsmith of Olypus, and asks him about it. He says he didn't make it and that the Olympus Gods had Pandora open it. She then heads to Justice League Dark and asks for their help. In the final scene, Colonel Trevor walks into the chamber confining Superman and removes the controlling helmet. It then turns out to be The Question, who asks him if he wants to find out who truly killed Doctor Light.
003 Justice League Dark #22 - Chapter 3: House of Cards. Xanadu is now captive of the mysterious character leading the Secret Society, Firestorm has finally made Kryptonite, and Batman and others study Doctor Light's body, The Phantom Stranger appears. He tells them that Wonder Woman has enlisted the aid of Justice League Dark and it would be bad if they found Pandora. In Superman's captive room, however, The Question finally convices the Man of Steel to escape after showing him a newspaper clip of Dr. Psycho in the area of Kahndaq. He decides to break out. And convinces most of the remaining heroes to ignore Amanda and follow him. Wonder Woman, in the meantime, convinces Constantine and the others to join with her; they head to the House of Mystery where Zatanna, Batman, and others are waiting. There's a standoff and Woman Woman attacks The Phantom Stranger. Sides are taken, splitting up all the heroes. Wonder Woman has Zatanna teleport her team out to locate Pandora. Colonel Trevor, Batman, and others call on Constantine to stop them, but he's disappeared with Shazam! As all this is happening, Superman is getting sicker; no one knows exactly why. Madame Xanadu is still in captivity, receiving future glimpses. The stranger then tells her he has a "mole" in the Justice League.
004 Constantine #5 - Trinity War Tie-In. Shows where Constantine took Shazam! John leads Shazam! to a bar and then tricks him into turning into Billy Batson and stealing his voice which in turn steal his power. Nearly at the same time, The Flame of Cold has a demon come forth and attack John in the bar. John becomes Shazam! and fights. Together, he and Billy defeat the creature; at the same time, Billy tricks him into giving him his powers back. As Shazam! he leaves the bar, but not before Constantine warns him not to touch the box.
005 Trinity of Sin: Pandora #2 - Trinity War Tie-In. Begins with "Pride" ordering "Envy" to block Pandora as she tries to remove them from the world. The next phase of the story has Agents Kincaid of SHADE and Chang of ARGUS working together and merging their files on Pandora. Back at the site where Pandora encountered Superman, members of the Secret Society, Giganta, Signalman, and Vandal Savage are attempting to track her down. She finds them before they find her and takes them out, except for Savage. They fight to the death, which means nothing to immortals, and she gives Vandal the Box, thinking he may have a heart of darkest evil. He doesn't and collapses under its power.
006 Trinity of Sin: Phantom Stranger #11 - Trinity War Tie-In. The Phantom Stranger leads Batman, Katana, and Deadman with him through heavenly realms. On their journey, the humans are drawn into their own versions of heaven, but the Stranger rescues them until they are finally in front of Doctor Light. Arthur doesn't remember anything useful to them and the Stranger vows to return him to the living. Suddenly, Zauriel and his angels intervene and send Doctor Light forward into the afterlife, and begin to banish Phantom Stranger forever.
007 Justice League of America #7 - Chapter 4. Opening with Lex Luthor, his lawyers say they could have him out of prison within the day. He's not concerned, though, because he knows someone set Superman up. Soon after, Pandora shows up. She wants to hand him the Box. Elsewhere, there are two divisions: Green Arrow, Superman, and teammates go after Doctor Psycho. They learn he's part of the Secret Society, but didn't mess with the Man of Steel. The Atom also admits that Waller created the JLA to replace the JL. The other team is headed by Wonder Woman with her group. They confront Lex as he's about to receive the Box. By the end of the issue, things go to worse. Wonder Woman is now under the Box's control.
008 Trinity of Sin: Pandora #3 - Trinity War Tie-In. Occurring within the military installation holding Lex Luthor, the Justice "Leagues" are fighting amongst themselves as Pandora watches. The issue goes through many chapters of her history as she tries to understand how to defeat the Seven Deadly Sins. By the end, she realizes that she has to embrace the concepts of evil for her weapons to affect them. In doing so, she kills Greed. And now she's ready for the next evil.
009 Justice League Dark #23 - Chapter 5. The fight at military prison for Lex Luthor continues. Wonder Woman has it, but SHAZAM! gets it. His magic interferes with it and its evil starts contaminating everyone. It continues switching hands until John Constantine gets it, teleporting out with Zatanna.. Somehow, they end up at the Temple of Hephaestus. They then go underground and find...Batman and his team, ready to strike, but also see Madame Xanadu, who can explain what's really happening. Zatanna tells them that the Box is actually a doorway. From the shadows, The Outsider muses and says she's right. He then suggests that it is time for the doorway to open.
010 Justice League #23 - Chapter 6, Final. This issue begins by explaining how The Outsider arrived to our dimension, gathered her resources and enacted. It all started at the same time as Darkseid's siege. The battle of heroes then subsides; Firestorm realizes that it isn't evil affecting Superman, it's a sliver of Kryptonite in his brain. The Atom admits she's a traitor, putting it there. Suddenly Cyborg's armor pulls away, calling itself Grid, and leaving Victor Stone near death. The Outsider activates the Box, saying it is an object of science from his dimension, the Birthplace of Evil! As the energies sway and circle, The Crime Syndicate emerges!

Batman's Next Plan...Stinks!

SUPERFUNNIES

But It Could Be Worse

~Excerpt from Superman #16 (2013)

One thing you have to know about Batman; he's always assessing and reassessing the situation. This also means he's evaluating and reevaluating what you're capable of doing...or not doing.

This week's submission comes from the H'el On Earth event. The Justice League is assisting Superman and Superboy in an assault on The Fortress of Solitude, controlled by H'el. And yes, they're following Batman's plan.

Are heroes and villains smart? Naw. #SuperFunnies updates every week (usually Fridays) on The Superheroes List. Here are the bloopers, flip-flops, and all-together moments of levity during exchanges of humor and snapshots of utterly ridiculous decisions in comic books.

Throne of Atlantis: Detailed Notes
Issue Summaries of The Event

The following summaries are descriptions of the titles, including spoilers. These are provided below the Reading List so you can avoid them if you wish.

Above: Arthur meets with his brother, the king, looking for answers. Excerpt Aquaman #14 (2013).

001 Aquaman #14 (The official prelude to the Throne of Atlantis event. Beginning in Amnesty Bay, Maine, Arthur uses his aquatic telepathy to summon his brother, the current ruler and king of Atlantis, for a meeting. Once together, he reveals that Black Manta has been stealing the powerful Atlantean relics for some purpose and fears that whoever is doing so may be preparing an attack on the surface world. The king rebuffs Aquaman, though, and states he has no desire to assault the surface-dwellers. After some underwater politics and history are exchanged, the two separate and Arthur has no answers. A second, brief part of the issue shows Vulko, who has lived above water for some time, over the body of an Atlantean. He fears something has gone wrong in the kingdom and dives into the water. Elsewhere, Black Manta is at Belle Reeve. It turns out that Amanda Waller seeks to enlist him into her Suicide Squad for underwater missions. At the interview, though, he becomes violent, overpowers his guard, and emphatically states that he will only die for Aquaman, giving us a glimpse into the level of determination in this super-villain. By the end of the issue, someone is near the depths of The Trench with the scepter of the dead king and unleashes it's power, reopening the crevice, and unleashing the hungry, man-eating sea-creatures to fed.

The Main Event
002 Justice League #15 (Starts the story after the events in Aquaman #14. Beginning in the Mid-Atlantic Ocean, the USS MABUS has a corrupted missile testing which inadvertently goes off below the sea levels; we recognize that it hits the hidden city of Atlantis. Cyborg is notified that the carrier is missing while in the Watchtower and contacts Batman. Almost at the same time, Aquaman and Mera appear in Gotham and he discusses the strange behavior of the fish. The issue cuts to Superman and Wonder Woman, basically on a date in Metropolis as Clark Kent and Diana Prince, when the lights go. Tidal Waves hit and they fly to save the city. During the rescue, they encounter the Atlantean, Vulko, who passes out, but says he needs to meet with King Arthur. Meanwhile, Cyborg transmits to Batman that Metropolis and Boston have been hit by a tidal wave and Gotham City is next. Arthur immediately recognizes the danger: this is an Atlantean War Plan and attack is imminent!)
003 Aquaman #15 (Continues from Justice League #15, a very short period later. As the issue opens, Gotham City is hit by the aforementioned tidal wave. Arthur and Mera, still present, attempt to save as many Gothamites as possible. Batman moves Aquaman in the Batwing to the next city to help more people and questions the Atlantean's motives. Arthur explains some of his history and adamantly denies that they are his people. Suddenly, the Batwing is downed by an explosion. Batman and Arthur escape, but Arthur tells him that the Atlanteans are specifically targeting the Dark Knight as part of the war plans. In Metropolis, Superman and Wonder Woman examine Vulko, he awakens and throws a fit, but Wonder Woman puts him at bay. All parties end up at the Watchtower and Aquaman explains how the Atlanteans, led by his brother, Orm, are reacting. They tell him Orm needs to be brought in. Soon later in Boston, Orm appears looking for his brother, Aquaman appears, trying to reason with him but Orm has none of it. Finally having enough, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman appear and tell Arthur their bringing him in. Unfortunately, Arthur won't allow it and grabs Batman.)
004 Justice League #16 (Continues immediately from Aquaman #15. With Vulko in The Watchtower explaining things, Cyborg locates Dr. Shin and sends a Boom Tube down to the surface to extract him. Immediately, though, Atlantean units appear and attack, fearing Shin may know how to defend against their strategies. Elsewhere, Aquaman attempts to keep the sides from battle, but is unsuccessful. Batman, then Wonder Woman, engages. Orm rebuffs their attempts and calls the Atlantean Armada out of the water. It's war now! Back at The Watchtower, Cyborg manages to get Shin after defending against their assassination attempt. He calls on his father at STAR labs, who is working with Dr. T.O. Morrow. Morrow is ready to bring his weather controlling tech robot online and Silas is asked to upgrade his son's cybernetics. Cyborg, however, has an additional mandate: he is calling in new Justice League members! As the battle between Orm and the original members subside, Orm has used his trident and crown to suck them all into the ocean!)
005 Aquaman #16 (Continues from Justice League #16, after a brief period. At STAR Labs, Victor is now undergoing the removal of his lungs. Elsewhere in Boston, the newest members to the JL are on duty and fighting down the Atlantean Troops. Orm is now setting charges and preparing to blow the surface area. Meanwhile, the main part of the story is occurring down in the mid-Atlantic Ocean, in The Trench. The Main League members are entombed down there, waiting to be eaten alive. Aquaman races down there and with Batman's aid, finds that the Sceptre controlled by Orm should be able to control the mutant race. Ironically, though, this is not the sceptre in Orm's hands. Vulko has it. At the end, Cyborg leads Mera down to Aquaman's location and they fight the remaining Trench-dwellwers. The rest, however, have been led to the surface world, where Vulko has them attack!)
006 Justice League #17 (Continuing very closely from Aquaman #16. Now realizing Vulko is behind the staging of the war, The Justice League, Arthur leading, attempts to route and convince Oceanmaster of the trickery. Arthur confronts his brother, but Orm believes none of it until he is thoroughly beaten by the hero known as Aquaman. Finally down, he yields, giving Arthur the throne of Atlantis.Vulko is located, but by now it doesn't matter; this, too, was all of his plan. He willfully hands the ancient Sceptre to Arthur, who then commands the creatures of the Trench to retreat. The battle over, Arthur now prepares to be king while Orm sits in prison at Belle Reve. And lastly, as all this occurs, the last page snaps to Amanda Waller, looking through photos of criminals, saying a new team is needed.)
007 Aquaman #17 (The Epilogue of Throne of Atlantis. As the war had wound down, someone is scavenging the ocean floor for Atlantean weapons and selling them globally. Arthur and his Atlantean team try to stop them. Waller, later, has a conversation with Arthur; it's clear she's trying to size him up and learn things, but he remains an enigma. As he leaves, she gives orders to bring Mera is now before it's too later. Aquaman heads to the waters below, releasing a full wave of aquatic telepathy to let the ocean-dwellers know their king has returned. Deep within the Antartica, though, one mysterious-shrouded figure appears to disagree.)

The Trench
Need To Catch Up?

For those of you just getting into the Throne of Atlantis event, you might find yourself wondering about some of the past events.

The Complete Aquaman Catalog (Amazon)

The trench is opens up the brand-new vision of Aquaman with his own series from 2011 and The DC New 52. Sea Creatures have emerged from the depths of Atlantic to spill forth and fed upon the denizens of the surface world. Arthur and Mera start searching for clues and unlock the secrets of The Trench in this mystery.

This collects Aquaman #1-6 with writer Geoff Johns and artists Ivan Reis and Joe Prado.

One of the most spectacular returns of all, Arthur has returned with his wife, Mera, and been vitalized as a character surpassing the Aquaman stereotyping and stigma of before. From the beginning, Johns addresses the role of the hero beyond some simple, underwater, breathing, fish-talking, 3rd-rater. As the story progresses, we learn that he is warrior born and bred, a survivor, and an in-depth character that will draw fans for years.

Is Cheetah Working with the Legion of Doom?

VILLAINOUS MOMENTS

A Nefarious Alliance Revealed!

~Cheetah, from Justice League #14 (2013)

Something sinister is about to happen at Belle Reve, and it appears to be the Legion of Doom.

This story comes from the pages of Justice League #13-14, where Wonder Woman and the rest of the Justice League are taking out Cheetah, her one-time friend named Barbara Minerva. After tracking her down and learning the secret of her powers, she's been imprisoned in a special cell for an undefined period.

But apparently that's what Cheetah wants. The JL should have checked her for bugs because Cheetah is now in direct communication with other super-villains. Black Manta is one of her confirmed allies, and with those two on the roster the likelihood is that we'll be seeing the Legion of Doom in the near future.

Superhero Inventor #4: Victor Stone

THE TOP 10 GREATEST SUPERHERO INVENTORS

Where Does He Get He Parts?

~Excerpt from Teen Titans #23 (2003)

Victor Stone; he's really managed to pull off a sweet deal. You gotta hand it to him, there's no way to not feel sorry for the young man who, caught in an explosion, had his "parts" replaced by his father and turned into a half-human, half-machine superhero named Cyborg. Victor is barely an adult, but has quietly turned his misfortune into one of brilliance and innovative engineering.

Most of the Occupy Wall Street movement gives Victor a pass and it's easy to see why. Half of Victor's fights end up with holes blown through his chest, missing legs, or a dented head. And you can't blame a guy for needing spare parts, even though he carries around his own White Noise Generator.

In truth, though, Victor's just as rich as all those other inventing superheroes. Always sporting the latest in hardware, you can be guranteed he'll have the best iPod on the market. Do you have a cell phone? Well, his is in his arm; rumors are circulating that he's hacking his phone bill and has full coverage.

Besides Cyborg's superhero life, he's usually found in one of two groups. Originally, he was a member of the Titans, with members like Nightwing and Starfire. Later, he moved into The Justice League (meaning he has Bruce Wayne funding) and has become their lead tech. (How convenient, because the JLA doesn't provide any customer support for the rest of us.) With a half a brain composed of the world's most advanced operating system, he's certain to be on the front edge for years to come.

The Top 10 Greatest Superhero Inventors is a Countdown sponsored by The Superheroes List, giving you a look at some of the most brilliant minds, working their way with gadgets and innovations. It's also a tribute to the 2012 coming of Labor Day. If you like this kind of thing, head on over and check it out!

Pandora Is Her Name

~Justice League #6 (2012)

This issue of Justice League is packed with some interesting info; it would also have to win a grand prize for Villainous Moments.

Why's that? Glad you asked; the beginning puts the League directly in confrontation with Darkseid in a battle for the fate of the world. Once that's over, another chapter called "The Beginning" suggests a super villainous group is about to become revealed (Legion of Doom perhaps?).

Lastly, we come upon this week's most villainous moment. Her name is Pandora and she's in a conversation with The Phantom Stranger; together, they make up two-thirds of the Sinners. What's most interesting is their allusion to her remaking the world. My friends, this could get real interesting if she's the lady figure that appeared at the end of the Flashpoint event.

DC Ice-Master #6: Icemaiden

Appearing as one of the first ice-wielding heroes in the DC Universe, Sigrid Nansen of Norwegian descent receives the trophy as Icemaiden, first appearing in Infinity Inc. #32 (1986, but technically her character did appear in Super Friends #9 in the 70s). The child of a leading scientist in the government, she underwent a series of experiments that granted her the power to freeze objects and generate frozen shapes. One of her most unique abilities was to fashion icy armor as a form of protection. Read More...
