Rise of The Third Army: Prelude
Breaking Their Ranks

Before this story begins, it's important to know that Hal Jordan is no longer an official Green Lantern; his ring was removed by The Guardians. Sinestro, on the other hand, has been surprisingly restored to Green Lantern status. With his powers, he's fashioned/restored a special ring for Hal Jordan to use; it allows him to control Hal's powers.
000 Green Lantern #7 (The best starting point for the event, titled "The Secret of The Indigo Tribe". Sinestro comes to earth to retrieve Hal Jordan after recovering The Book of The Black and learning that the Guardians of Oa are going to get rid of the Corps. In the middle of their altercation, both are captured by the Indigo Tribe.)
001 Green Lantern #8 (Hal Jordan finds himself on the homeworld of The Indigo Tribe and breaks free using a barely-working green-energy ring. After travelling across the landscape, he comes upon a secret, that Abin Sur founded their order. Facing down the hordes of the tribe, it turns out Sinestro has been converted into their ranks.)
The New Guardians Connection
Kylre Rayner and his band of assorted Ring Wearers are facing numerous and twisting plots that are causing the fall of each color of the spectrum.
002 Green Lantern New Guardians #8 ("Hunting The Last of The Yellow Lanterns." Kyle Rayner and his team begin to suspect a diabolical plot as they learn The Sinestro Corps has been disbanded and remaining members killed.)
003 Green Lantern New Guardians #9 ("Beyond Hope". The Blue Lanterns are surprised by an invasion from The Reach, threatening their Blue Battery and homeworld.)
004 Green Lantern New Guardians #10 ("Beyond Hope, Conclusion". The battle is hard fought, but the Blue Lanterns are forced to flee their world, now vowing vengeance on Larfleeze.)
005 Green Lantern New Guardians #11 ("Operation: Agent Orange". Kyle's forces attack Larfleeze until they realize that the true ring-thief manipulating them is Guardian Sayd.)
006 Green Lantern New Guardians #12 ("In The Name Of Love". Joining with Larfleeze, the the ring-wielders attack Invictus and take him down. In the end, they disband, learning Sayd had brought them together through a series of lies.)
The Secret of The Indigo Tribes (Resumes)
007 Green Lantern #9 (From a small battle, Hal Jordan escapes Sinestro and the Tribe, fleeing into the jungles. Using his ring, he locates the Purple Energy power source and it's creater, Notromo. There, he learns that Abin Sur helped this maker create the battery and rings for the Tribe, taking the universes' worst murderers and villains and changing them to become compassionate. Notromo also tells Hal how Abin Sur foresaw that the Guardians of The Universe would become the next greatest threat after The Blackest Night. Hal then tells him that Abin Sur is dead and Notromo destroys the battery source in response. As the Indigo Tribe arrives for him, they return to their former selves: killers.)
008 Green Lantern #10 (Hal and Sinestro are fleeing the freed-killers of the Indigo Tribe when they come upon Notromo, also trying to escape. Although he has given up hope, they convince him to rebuild the Purple Power Battery; the only problem is he needs a purple spark. Iroque comes upon them and tells them that they have to fix it, showing compassion, and producing the needed light. Immediately the battery is restored and the Tribe is rejuvenated. Hal then tells Iroque that Sinestro can become a hero once more, and she frees the former villain from purple's grasp. Meanwhile, The Black Hand attempts to escape the purple ring as it attempts to re-bind to him; diving off a cliff, he commits suicide. Shortly thereafter, a black ring finds him and forms a new bond.)
009 Green Lantern #11 (Now on a hunt for The Black Hand, Hal and Sinestro go to Korugar, where the latter is keeping The Book of The Black. Little do either of them know, The Guardians of Oa are searching for it to and tracking their movements. Sinestro shows Hal the Book and tells him that The Guardians plan on raising a "Third Army". He opens the Book and they are suddenly teleported in front of The Black Hand.)
010 Green Lantern #12 (The two Green Lanterns now find themselves in Coast City, USA, Earth, before the presence of The Black Hand. Apparently the book now wants to be near its avatar, so it teleported them. The Lanterns battle; during this altercation, the issue goes into the plan from The Guardians and how they tricked Sinestro into thinking he was chosen for the Green Ring. It's also verified that Ganthet has sided with the rest of them. Back to the battle: Hal and Sinestro try one last trick, exploding Sinestro's yellow lantern with green energy. It works, but the two are knocked out before The Black Hand...who has now learned Jordan will be the Greatest Black Lantern.)
The Alpha WarFocused on John Stewart and Guy Gardner, the important knowledge here is that John had to kill a Green Lantern (Kirrt Kallek) in their last battle, to avoid information passing into enemy hands that would allow for an invasion of Oa. The Guardians intend to exploit this situation as a means to disable the entire Corps.
011 Green Lantern Corps #8 (At the beginning of the story, all the Alpha Lanterns are called back to Oa. Meanwhile, Guy Gardner and John Stewart are in the middle of burying the Yellow Power Battery when Guy is called to The Guardians and elevated to a position higher than the rest of the Corps. While talking to John, and within the sequence of a barfight, the Alpha Lanterns arrive and put Jon under arrest for the murder of another Green Lantern.)
012 Green Lantern Corps #9 (John's ring is drained and he's placed in Alpha Lantern custody. Guy heads to the Guardians, but can't talk them out of the trail process; they claim that the Alpha Lanterns now handle Green Lantern "justice" independently. John's trial begins and after short statements, the Alphas deliberate. Upon returning, they find him guilty and sentence him to death.)
013 Green Lantern Corps #10 (Sentenced to die, the Alphas attempt to determine the executioner. After consulting with The Guardians, they are forced to kill John by themselves. Guy brings John his last meal, and then stages a prison break. The Corps now faces the Alphas and they power down Guy and his allies at the end.)
014 Green Lantern Corps #11 (Defeated in battle, the Green Lanterns aiding John's escape are imprisoned. Meanwhile, he and Guy escape to the Ring Foundry where they animate The Manhunters. They use these creations to send a second wave of attack at the Alpha Lanterns. In the interim, the Guardians are watching and acting neutral as the Corps starts to implode. As the Alphas start to defeat the Manhunter creations, the broken parts begin assembling into one larger, more powerful, Manhunter.)
015 Green Lantern Corps #12 (After shifting their tactics, the huge amalgam Manhunter is defeated by the Alpha Lanterns. They power down all the Green Lanterns opposing them and take Guy and John into custody. They prepare to execute John immediately, but then Alpha Lantern Varix powers their rings and they free themselves and kill one of the Alphas. Varix then aids in destroy the rest; at the end of his betrayal, he laments of the sacrifice the Alpha Lanterns have made and commits suicide for the corruption committed. At the end of the issue, there are no more Alpha Lanterns; a funeral is arranged for Varix, and the Guardians of Oa start the next phase of their dastardly plan.)
Chapter 1: Rise of The Third Army
The Third Army Attacks

016 Green Lantern Annual #1 (Hal awakens in a grave where Black Hand has placed him and Sinestro, but digs his way out. Soon, all three of them come to battle, Sinestro working with Hal. Unfortunately, they don't have enough power against the summoned dead and the Black Ring. Elsewhere, the Guardians reveal the Chamber of Shadows, where other Oans have been residing for eons to keep an entity called "The First Lantern" imprisoned. In a stunning move to use the First Lantern's energy, the Guardians attack their brothers and sisters and kill one of their own. They also secure this mysterious Lantern and his energy. After the skirmish, they then lend their aid to The Black Hand. As a consequence, he appears to kill Hal and Sinestro. Their rings flee them before they disappear and we see them no more. The Guardians, now satisfied with his success, also send Black Hand to the Chamber of Shadows. And now, with the First Lantern at their disposal, they begin creating their Third Army.
017 Green Lantern New Guardians #0 (This issue is part of the September 2012, DC "0" Month. It occurs after Hal and Sinestro disappear from the graveyard fight. Carol Ferris is concerned that Hal went off with Sinestro, but before she can do anything, Kyle Rayner shows up with similar questions. On the television, they see the two Green Lanterns fighting Black Hand. Immediately they "suit up" and head to the site. Arriving, they are beset with swarms of undead of the Black Energy; their two different ring spectrums take many of them down, but while Carol is unavailable, Kyle is suddenly able to summon the energy of Hope in addition to his green light. After the battle, Carol's ring shows him the future, where Kyle will be able to use all the different colors of the spectrum. He begins to prepare, and to look for Hal soon.
018 Green Lantern #0 (This issue is part of the September 2012, DC "0" Month. This happens near simultaneous with Green Lantern New Guardians #0, and it is probably that one of the rings fleeing Sinestro and Hal in Green Lantern Annual #0 reaches this new Green Lantern. Simon Baz is a car thief. That would be a simple explanation, but things go awry when the car he steals turns out to have a terrorist's bomb in the back. He runs it into the harbor where it explodes. Instead of a hero, though, he's considered a Jihadist and interrogated by the government because of his Muslim heritage. Before they can torture him, a faulty Green Lantern ring chooses him and he escapes. The Justice League becomes aware of the situation and a Third Army warrior is seen hunting for Simon at the end.)
019 Green Lantern #13 (Occurs after Green Lantern #0. Simon now has his ring and The Justice League is tracking him down. Simon is confused with his newly-found powers and runs to his sister, Siri. Meanwhile, the President has Amanda Waller send agents out to find him. In other parts of the land, the Third Army vessels are assimilating humans into their ranks and growing into numbers. They sense Simon's energy and attempt to locate him. First, though, the Justice League locates him at a special hiding place. And they want answers.)
020 Green Lantern New Guardians #13 (This issue occurs near simultaneous throughout the Green Lantern #13 story. Carol now brings in Atrocitus of the Red Lanterns to train Kyle in Rage and the power behind the Red Power Spectrum. Elsewhere, the issue takes a brief jumps to Sector 2819, where the Third Army are attacking the out fringes of that space. Establishing the Third Army movement now, the issue then returns to Atrocitus taking Kyle to a scene of atrocity, holding him in check, to observe a brutal act of horror; that's when the Green Lantern becomes cloaked in the powers of the Red Energy Power. Now capable of using this energy, Atrocitus leaves Kyle and Carol, who are preparing to find Arkillo and learn the Yellow Spectrum.)
021 Green Lantern Corps #13 (This issue obviously occurs after the creation of the Third Army in Green Lantern Annual #1 and appears to occur near simultaneous throughout the Green Lantern #13 story. Guy receives the title of "Green Lantern Sentinel" as the Guardians secretly begin sending their Third Army out to absorb and create more vassals. They also release Xar, one of Guy's biggest enemies, from his prison on Oa. While on an important diplomatic mission, Guy learns of Xar's release and splits his squad in two, half heading to his family on Earth. The Guardians expected this, though, and, now divided, have them ambushed. Guy watches in horror as one Lantern under his command, Vandor, is assimilated.)
022 Red Lanterns #13 (This issue occurs after Green Lantern: New Guardians #13, once Atrocitus leaves Kyle and Carol, which means it is near simultaneous with Green Lantern Corps #13. Atrocitus and his small band of Red Lanterns heed a call in Sector 2967, where the rage of a young woman calls to them. Upon arriving, they slaughter the instigators of their hatred, but are then plagued upon by creatures of the Third Army. While the fight continues, though, Atrocitus learns that their weakness lies in their eyes; when they are pull from one, the others also feel the pain.)
Chapter 2: The Guardian Tactics
As Chaos Ensues, The Lanterns Fall Across The Cosmos
023 Green Lantern #14 (Although this issue is a continuation from Green Lantern #13, it's clear from the timespan that it resumes after Red Lanterns #13. There is a scene showing Atrocitus and Bleez fighting the Third Army. Simon confronts the Justice League, attempting to surrender, but the heroes want to interrogate him. Reaching for his ring, it reacts violently and the visage of Sinestro is observed saying "Don't Touch My Ring!". Confused, Simon tries to get away and the chase begins. He finally escapes to see his sister, hoping to find the original owner of a car he jacked. Meanwhile, the Guardians' plan is coming to fruition, using the power of the first Lantern to fuel their Third Army and disintegrate will across the universe. In the Chamber of Shadows, the imprisoned Oans ponder their predicament until The Black Hand resurrects one of their fallen members. In the final scenes, the issue cuts to Hal and Sinestro, who are in another dimension. During their readjustment, they are greeted by a mysterious figure. But this enigma is not happy to see Sinestro.
024 Red Lanterns #14 (Continues from Red Lanterns #14, but is placed after Green Lantern #14, where images of this battle are presented. Atrocitus and his Red Lanterns continue the fight until none of the Third Army are left. Then he takes samples and analyzes them, learning that the controlling force is the Guardians of Oa. He then dispatches Rankorr to finish his mission of vengeance and hate and become a fully-forged Red Lantern. He sends Bleeze with him. Atrocitus decides the only way to stop the Third Army is to raise another synthetic army, so he goes to his dead homeworld, Ryut, in Sector 666. Once there, though, he is confront by painful memories of times before, as if he is reliving the past.)
025 Green Lantern Corps #14 (Continues from Green Lantern Corps #14, but also shows scenes of the other Lanterns fighting, which put it here. After losing his entire team of Green Lanterns to the Third Army, Guy scoops up his family and leaves this with the Justice League. Something strange is happening and Kilowog notices that their are less recruits, even though the logs suggest their roles are filled. Treachery from the Guardians is being suspected. Elsewhere, Jon Stewart is following the Mogo "chunks" and he is met by Star Sapphire Fatality, also locked onto a piece. And finally, when Guy arrives back at the Oan homeworld, they scold him and he ultimately resigns from the Green Lantern Corps.
026 Green Lantern New Guardians #14 (Represents a break in the series, resuming where Kyle is training with a member of the Indigo Tribe. Studying with Indigo-1, Kyle learns the power of the Indigo Light, he prepares to study yellow, but is also warned to be careful of the power of love. On Zamaron, Carol approaches her queen who removes her power, but then returns it. When Carol leaves, we find out that the Guardians have made an alliance with the Zamarons to let Carol keep her power so they can track her to Hal's undetectable ring. In the last part of the issue, Kyle manages to locate Arkillo and the two battle it out, but not before he is capable of channeling the yellow light. Arkillo, at the same time, regains his powers.)
027 Green Lantern Corps #15 (This issue shows scenes from the other titles, placing it here. This story shows only brief items for the event. Guy is now back at home, angry that he's lost all that he's worked for. Elsewhere, the Guardians are reviewing their destructive tactics when they realize that Salaak has been spying on them. They captured and imprison him. In another scene, Lantern Stewart and Sapphire Fatality share information about Mogo - that it's both male and female, and that something is keeping it from reforming. They use Fatality's tether power to track the source. Returning to Gardner's story, which occurs after an undisclosed period of time, he decides that he can still do a lot, even without a ring. That's when he attempts to bust up a drug deal, but ends up fouling up a police string operation. Once the cat is out of the bag, he's arrested by his sister and handcuffed.)
Chapter 3: Lanterns Unite!
The Remnants of the Corps Attempt to Reassemble
028 Green Lantern #15 (Continues from Green Lantern #14, but resumes a period of time later. MANY PLOTS! Simon finally locates the home of the owner of the vehicle he hijacked and greets the man to apologize. It turns out, however, that this guy is the true terrorist, having intended the bomb to go off under a bridge. He attempts to kill Simon, but the Green Lantern ring protects him...barely, before running out of power. Before the terrorist can shoot Simon, Agent Franklin Fed shows up and stops him. Before they can resolve their conflict, though, the creatures of the Third Army break into the house, sensing Green Lantern energies. They absorb the terrorist, and Simon and Fed make it to the basement, where they find an arsenal. They set up a huge explosion and blow the house. In the secondary plot of the story, Hal and Sinestro are still following the strange figure - an enemy to Sinestro and friend to Hal - when it tells them that they are actually in The Dead Zone. In the third plot, the Green Lantern Corps is now aware of the Guardians madness; throughout the issue, they are trying to locate one another, including B'dg, who heads to earth to find out that Simon is not the Green Lantern Hal Jordan. And lastly, in the final plot, The Guardians realize that their Third Army is spreading too thin, so they pull more power from the first Lantern, who we now know is named: Volthoom.)
029 Green Lantern New Guardians #15 (Continues from Green Lantern New Guardians #14, but resumes a period of time after space travel. With Arkillo and Star Sapphire, Kyle finally arrives to the planet Okaraara, home of Larfleeze, the Orange Lantern and the former Guardian, Sayd. Kyle makes a plea for training, but it is Carol who convinces Larfleeze to train him after using her powers to learn that he seeks to find his family and true name. She bargains to help him later in exchange. All Kyle has to do is charge his ring in the orange battery - if he can get past the Orange Lantern, but while they are battling, the Third Army arrives. Kyle manages to absorb the orange energy, but Sayd holds the monsters back, ordering them to teleport away. She tells them to give Ganthet her love and is finally killed. Meanwhile, back on Oa, the a brainwashed Ganthet realizes that Kyle Rayner is his problem, and prepares to deal with him, one on one.)
Optional: Green Lantern New Guardians Annual #1 - It's not Bannered, or an official Rise of The Third Army issue, but if you're looking for an additional read, this comic book occurs during the event and shows Kyle traveling to the Star Sapphire's planet to learn to harness their energy. The main plot involves the Zamaron treaty with Lady Styx.
030 Green Lanterns New Guardians #16 (Starts after the events in Green Lantern New Guardians Annual #1, where there is a scene of Ferris, Saint Walker, and Arkillo, returning. The Sapphires attempt to use their powers to unlock Kyle's love, but are unsuccessful. The Queen, sensing Ganthet's arrival, releases Kyle and the two powers meet. Kyle attempt to channel all the colors he's mastered, but it's not enough. The Sapphires then launch waves of attack. They have the Guardian on the ropes, but Kyle stops them, seeking an alternative instead of death. Suddenly, Ganthet strikes him down from behind. Kyle, losing his life, suddenly finds that he understands love. Channeling every color of the spectrum, he then becomes The White Lantern! Using his new powers, he defeats Ganthet, causing the Guardian to flee. Kyle now decides that it's time to enter the battle.)
031 Red Lanterns #15 (Continues immediately from Red Lanterns #14 and does not cross into any other titles, but the sequences within place it around Green Lantern #15. It may be moved at a later date. Atrocitus, now on his home planet, begins awakening a long-hidden squadron of Manhunters that he defeated long ago. Thinking that they were made by the same Oans who created the Third Army, he begins to use his blood magic to make them work for him. Meanwhile, Rankorr leads Bleez to his brother's location on earth and that's when the man who killed their grandfather arrives. Confronting his hatred, Rankorr isn't sure if he can embody the aspect. Returning to the central theme of the issue, Atrocitus begins ordering the reprogrammed Manhunters, but they turn on him and begin firing.)
032 Green Lantern #16 (Continues immediately from Green Lantern #15, but has scenes that show the events in Green Lantern Corps #15 have occurred. Also states that it should be read before Green Lantern Corps #16. B'dg attempts to understand what happened and learns that Simon's ring is actually fueled by Sinestro's, something both merging together. In the confusing aftermath, both Hal and Sinestro imprinted a message on the device and it is is learned that the Guardians have run afoul. Seeing that he can cause almost anything into existence, Simon races to the hospital to revive Nazir from his coma.Desperately wanting this and defying even Green Lantern limits, Nazir suddenly gasps for life. B'dg is astounded. Their congratulations are short-lived when they see Guy Gardner had been arrested [From Green Lantern Corps #15] on TV. B'dg says they have to go find him before they leave. At the end of the issue, the story reverts to Hal and Sinestro in the Dead Zone. The mystery figure that has been leading them is Tomar-Re; he warns them that they have to stop Volthoom, The First Lantern, before he changes reality as they know it.)
033 Green Lantern Corps #16 (Continues from Green Lantern #16. Arrested and being questioned by his brother and sister, Guy tries to explain how he lost his ring. Suddenly, the jail is attacked; the Guardians have sent their Army to acquire and assimilate him. Guy is released from his restraints as the police and he attempt to make a standoff. Luckily, just in time, Lantern Baz and B'dg appear. Working together, they incinerate the Third Army soldiers. Elsewhere, Lantern Stewart and Sapphire Fatality find the source of Mogo's problems. A terrorist ship is using Mogo's remains to shoot a destructive green ray at a planet. Stewart and Fatality break it apart. As Steward communicates to Fatality, he realizes that the Guardians sent them away as part of their plan. In the last pages of the story, we return back to Gardner, learning that the Guardians are attempting to destroy them all!)
034 Red Lanterns #16 (Continues from Red Lanterns #15, but incorporates a period of time that concludes with the Manhunters invading Oa. Atrocitus survives the initial attack of The Manhunters and fends his way back into the offensive, finally killing their Alpha. Using his Blood Magic to control them, he orders them to attack Oa, with a sizable force following him to their homeworld, Maltus. On Earth, Rankorr is still barely embracing his new powers with the help of Bleez. He kills his target, but is assaulted by guilt. Bleez, however, sees a potential ally and attempts to sway him, failing. In turn, this makes her very vengeful. On Ysmalt, Red Lantern Ratchet finally figures out that the planet has vampiric tendencies, causing the Red Battery to have functioning difficulties. He falls through surface, finding himself face to face with The Inversions. Once Atrocitus reaches Maltus, he begins searching and comes upon many ghostly faces. The most surprising one, however, is Krona's!)
035 Green Lantern Corps Annual #1 (Continues from Green Lantern Corps #16 and also runs into simultaneous events with Red Lanterns #16. It also resolves Kyle's travel to Oa from Green Lantern New Guardians #16. An incredible issue, Guy, B'dg, and Simon separate, with Guy heading to Oa by himself. B'dg and Simon enter the Black Book and come face to face with The Black Hand in the Chamber of Shadows. With his construct landing in the Oan Foundry, he finds Kilowog and learns what's been going on with the Green Lantern Rings and members. In the meantime, the Guardians have sent out an Alert that all Corps member need to muster for inoculation against the new threat. It's clearly a trap. Elsewhere, one exciting event is Mogo's reformation, with the help of Stewart and Fatality. The Guardians send a wave of Third Army minions there, but Mogo protects his helpers and destroys the threat easily. Back on Oa, now allied with Kilowog, Guy leads a one-man frontal assault on the Guardians. Secretly, though, it's a distraction. As the Guardians are occupied, Kilowog frees the Corps rings and destroys their hold on trapped Lanterns. Guy's ring finds him; he's a Lantern once more! It's an all-out battle...but suddenly Kyle Rayner shows up with his multi-colored team. He's a White Lantern now. The Manhunters also appear, all attacking the Oan masters. About to lose, they draw more energy from The First Lantern, but the mistake is made to quickly. Volthoom escapes, vowing to destroy everything the Guardians have made.)
Your Comments:
Greetings!
Do you have any information, questions or comments, or would you like to mention something you've seen or heard surrounding the Rise of The Third Army event? If so, please feel free to submit your commits; just please remember to be courteous.

Do you have to read all four Lantern books to understand the story? Right now I am only picking up Green Lantern and New Guardians.
ReplyDeletePersonally the only one I'm not picking up is Red Lanterns, and while Rise of the Third Army and most of the other lead up could do without it, it does seem that Wrath at least includes a good chunk of the story in the book. Whether or not it's worth the trade is one thing, but if you are, I'm guessing only volume 3 is even close to necessary. That being said, Green Lantern Corps is definitely recommended.
DeleteHey Jairam!
ReplyDeleteThey way I'm seeing the story shape up, you should be fine. The Green Lantern series seems to be the most significant, and (so far) all of them are maintaining their own title integrity (meaning, no crossovers to other titles).
Volthoom? Guess we'll find out about Power Ring of the Crime Syndicate
ReplyDeleteActually, it seems to me that Atrocitus was blown apart in Red Lanterns #15 by the Manhunters' attack.
ReplyDeleteDoes this event conclude with the GLC Annual?
ReplyDeleteSorta. It transitions into Wrath of The First Lantern event. Check back on this page; when that starts, I'll have a transition link and a page for that event, too.
DeleteThank you! Awesome work!
DeleteHey Jem, Just wanted to let you know the link is posted up above. Let's cross our fingers for some good GL action!
ReplyDeleteCan someone help me, I am trying to enter the Death of The Family reading order and the page sends me here can someone help?
ReplyDeleteFixed it! I'm sorry for that. Somewhere the link got messed up. It's good now.
