The Marvel NOW! Reading Order

MAJOR EVENT: MARVEL NOW!

The Detailed Reading List With Summaries

Beginning Date: September 2012
End Date: September 2013.

Provided here is the contiguous, updated Reading Order for the Marvel NOW! reformation. Event, however, is too weak to use in this case; there are multiple themes and there are going to be over 300 issues when this is all said and done. Originally, this list was available on another site, but the decision was made to move it here; complications were arising due to the scope of information and size of the article, and it was becoming difficult to get publication approval.

Premise: Marvel NOW! occurs after the Avengers vs. X-Men event. In the conclusion of that saga, the Phoenix Force is snuffed and new mutants appear all over the world. The X-Men, as well, are forever broken and changed. All this becomes the catalyst for the ground-breaking things to come.

How To Use This Page: Below is the Reading Order, nothing more. If you wish to read summaries of issues, click the links provided. Those pages contain spoilers and additional analysis.

How To Use This Page: Below is the Reading Order, nothing more. For detailed issue summaries, click the underlined Story Arc title. Issues that lack a number are OPTIONAL!

Rule #1: The Reading Order is fluid until the event is over.
Rule #2: I listen to your comments and work well with others.
Rule #3: No profanity.

Marvel NOW! Point One
Where it All Begins

Above: A stranger appears with a warning for Nick Fury in Marvel NOW! Point One (2012).

Analysis: The beginning of this event belongs with the Point One issue. It is the "hop on" point intended to give readers an idea - clues, if you will - of the myriad of plots coming down the pike.

001 Marvel NOW Point One #1 (A visitor from the future is picked up by SHIELD and he asks for the New Nick Fury. After Fury and Coulson appear, they begin having a dialogue and the stranger imparts the stories of: The origin of Starhawk, The New Nova, The Return of Ant-Man, Loki and his remaking of the Young Avengers, and Forge and his task to help fix Cable. By the end of the story, the visitor gives Fury a warning and utters a strange word which causes the room to erupt in a lot of gunfire. Fury then questions Maria Hill and prepares for an important mission to come.)

Note: These next issues are are placed here until their next Story Arc or Theme are more detailed. They will then have their own section.

Journey Into Mystery #651 (Starts the new story arc without chronological markers. Established as a form of Asgardian fairy tale, Volstagg and his daughter, Hilde, are the stars when the dog, Hati, and her stumble upon two Dwarves freeing the Fenris Wolf. Hati attacks and the Wolf awakens and begins fighting. Hilde runs back to alert her father. He, in turn, awakens the remaining two of the Warrior's Three, Sif, and then Thor. They locate the Wolf in the All-Mother's garden. According to the Dwarves, they were trying to retrieve Gleipnir, the magical leash, and replace it with a new creation. But now, Fenris has awakened and hid it. Using Hati's nose, Hilde and he locate the leash buried at the bough of Golden Apple tree. With Gleipnir in hand, they prepare to bound the legendary creature. Fenris makes a barter, though, to avoid more bloodshed. Hilde must give him one of the apples for his consumption on her own; that will teach her a lesson. At the end, she does so, showing her bravery.)
Journey Into Mystery #652 (Continues from the previous issue after an undefined period. Sif speaks with Lady Gaea and watches as the goddess collapses. After some researching and speaking with Dr. Jane Foster, she takes the goddess to the Avengers Deep Space Station, hoping the expanse will renew her connection to nature. While there, though, Sif catches a pleading call from Beta Ray Bill, who is involved in a chase and crashes nearby.)
Iron Man #9 (Starts the next story arc, appears to occur after some work he's done with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Seeing the devastation of the Voldi which was masterminded by Recorder 451, Tony travels to Hope's Pustule and hires Death's Head the Bounty Hunter to track him down. They then go on a galaxy-spanning trip until they arrive on a Badoon ship. Tony thinks they are about to ambush Recorder 451, but is suddenly surprised with Death's Head reveals their location; the Hunter was secretly employed by his enemy first. Once the Bounty Hunter leaves, Recorder 451 reveals more of his plan; Tony is unable to do anything because his suit's defenses have already been compromised. But the amazing part of the story happens at the end; Recorder shows Tony an old film of his dad. The movie was meant and addressed for Tony. And in the background, next to his father, is Recorder 451!)
Iron Man #10 (Continues from Iron Man #9, after a very brief period. Tony watches the whole recording and can't believe it. According to the accounting, Howard Stark and his wife learned that Tony's birth was near impossible and wouldn't come to term. Unable to accept fate, he travels across the world for solutions until he comes upon an alien "grey" appearing as a human. The grey reveals that his family runs a casino in Nevada and have Recorder 451 in their capture; if Howard retrieves him, he'll receive the tech needed to make Tony's birth possible. Howard then assembles the "Stark Seven", with members like "Dum Dum" Dugan, Jimmy Woo, and Lieutenant Ross. Together they break in and free the Recorder, but the grey they are working with is killed by his family. As all this is revealed to Tony, Recorder 451 gives him a tranquilizer and prepares him to meet his parents as they travel across space. All of them.)
Iron Man #11 (Continues from Iron Man #10, with an undefined break. More of Stark's origin is revealed. We now learn that he was going to die at birth. Recorder 451, however, tells them that he can save the child, but wants to make an arrangement to do so. The Starks ultimately agree; the agreement is for Tony to be engineered as a super-genius, introducing innovative weapons and tech to defend the planet within the next 30 years. Before he is born, though, the greys track down the Recorder. They are stopped, but it's not over. Recorder tells them they'll be hunted.)
Cable and X-Force #8 (This story follows Cable and X-Force #7, and may be bundled with that issue in the near future. After rescuing the alien from The Raft, Cable and Peter are captured by Abagail Brand of SWORD. She tells him that the creature is actually a cruel and ruthless criminal wanted dead by at least 40 different planetary societies. Cable then shows her the truth; the alien's location was known as an assassination force was prepared to destroy Earth to kill him. Realizing his words rang true, Brand makes a special exception and takes the two of them out into space to rescue Domino, Boom Boom, and the rest of the team captured by the alien. Peter breaks into his craft and keeps the alien at bay, eventually completing the rescue. After success, though, Cable has other plans besides returning to prisoner status. They throw Brand into a suit and let her agents pick her up. Once back at The Peak, Brand radios Havok and tells him to bring his nephew in.)
Cable and X-Force #9 (Continues from the previous issue, with an undefined break. Centering on Hope. Captain America, Havok, and Rogue from the Uncanny Avengers are tracking her, believing she wants to rejoin Cable. They stop and attempt to dissuade her, but she previously gathered the powered of The Purple Girl and Mastermind. Using those abilities, she gets away, causing them to fight amongst illusions and themselves.)
X-Men #1 (Starts the new series. Jubilee travels to America to bring back an infant; she knows she's being followed, but only later is it revealed to be John Sublime. With Psylocke, Kitty Pryde, Storm, Rogue, and Rachel (Phoenix), they rescue Jubilee and the child. They also capture Sublime...he gives up willingly. Questioning him, they learn that he has a twin sister who battled him in the beginning. She was expelled from Earth, but survived and evolved with alien technology. Once he learns that Jubilee brought a baby with her, he screams that they have to stop her. Too late, she's been possessed and appears, preparing to do battle.)

    1. Hi Dian, thanks for checking in. The thing about those titles you mentioned is that they're not really Marvel NOW! and don't have that logo. I sort of agree with you, however, about doing something for them. I'm not sure yet, but I might be able to add them on the story arc events page.

  2. Thanks for this reading order! I do want to join Dian in reminding you of all the missing series though, there's quite a lot that were included in the Squidoo reading order that have been omitted from this one.

  3. The Uncanny Avengers is out of place. The beginning issues of Uncanny Avengers show Beast in his normal form, and have the Xavier funeral. These should take place before All New X-Men I think.

  4. Hey, just read through AvX and grabbed this to move on. Really love what you've done but I noticed something and wanted to let you know. In reading AvX: Consequences #1 Captain America is already in his armor costume and Wolverine makes a past reference to Xavier's funeral. However, at the funeral we see Cat-Beast, placing it before All-New X-Men #1-#8 and also old uniformed Captain America placing it before Avengers #1-#3.

Avengers vs. X-Men #12 depicted Captain America in his old costume talking to Cyclops in his cell, followed by Wolverine saying "I got a eulogy to give". Although it's release schedule has been wonky, since Uncanny Avengers was intentionally the only Marvel Now! title released in that first month last year, I think it was meant as a direct carry over and continuation of AvX. I mean I know it's the comic world, but the funeral connection makes it easier, placing this in what I assume would be a week long window. Especially because Alex visits Scott in his cell in UA #1. I think a lot of the events happen in fairly quick succession though.

-AvX #12 (Cap shown in old costume in Cyclops' cell, Wolverine says "I've got a eulogy to give")
-Uncanny Avengers #1-#5 (Xavier's funeral, Cat Beast, Old Cap Uniform)
-New Avengers #1-#3 (old costume Cap
-Avengers #1- (Cap gets new costume)
    -AvX Consequences
    ....
    -All New X-Men (#1-#8)

    1. I don't understand why so many people say that Captain America is in his old costume in Uncanny Avengers #1, because he is clearly in his new one. The easiest way to make the difference is his headgear; in his old uniform, it was more of a mask (and you see his ears), and in his new one, it's an helmet (you don't see his ears).

  5. Hello everybody !
First of all thanks for this reading order ! Keep up the good job.
I wanted to ask, does anyone know why the Wolverine and the X-men issues from the 24 to the end aren't included in the Marvel NOW! event?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Because even though they have the red band and the ReEvolution logo, they don't have the "Now!" under Marvel, and poster is only including explicitly Now! titles.
